Anti-Asthma's Herbs Used To Treat Asthma
Ngwame
A Dr. Manuel Raivoso, a pulmonary specialist, referred some chronic asthma patients to a herbalist after having no success with general asthma treatments. In a study of his own patients, of the 121 patients treated with Ngwame, 98 showed no further symptoms of asthma, even after four years of observation.
Pelargonium Sidoides (Umckaloabo)
The roots of Pelargonium sidoides have been used successfully in the treatment of chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia. The successful treatment of tuberculosis with Pelargonium Sidoides was recognised in the early 1920’s. Extracts of the root have found widespread usage against infections of the sinus, throat and respiratory tract.
Double-blind placebo controlled studies on patients with bronchitis proved that extracts of Pelargonium Sidoides had a positive effect in treating this illness. Other similar studies have also shown that this herb's extracts as being effective in treating tonsillopharyngitis in children aged between 6-10 years. Encouraging results have also been achieved with children, particularly children who have not responded well to continued antibiotic treatment.
The alcoholic extract of the root has been shown to have a triple effect:
- Anti-bacterial: the Pelargonium Sidoides extract stops bacteria from being able to attach to cells in the mucous membranes.
- Antiviral effect: as well as preventing bacteria attaching to cells, Pelargonium Sidoides stimulates the body’s immune system in such a way that both bacteria and viruses are prevented from multiplying.
- Expectorant: the extract behaves as an expectorant, allowing the body to expel contaminated mucous and making conditions in the body less suitable for bacteria and viruses to multiply.
This triple effect attacks the infection at its root. Due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth and reproduction, as well as having immune boosting characteristics, Pelargonium Sidoides is a good natural alternative to the conventional therapy of treating respiratory illnesses with antibiotics.
African Ginger, Chinese Ginger and Garlic
Known for their anti-inflammatory properties - of which asthma is an inflammatory disease - Ginger and Garlic are beneficial for respiratory problems like colds, flu, coughs, and of course asthmatic conditions.
